Bringing out the Best in Your Employees
When employees are inspired, it creates new opportunities, and a sense of synergy and energy that will drive your business toward increased success. But, building this winning team is more than simply hiring the right people with the right skills. As a leader and business owner, you must strive to create a sense of personal power within each employee so that they, too, demonstrate confidence and an attitude of excellence. Although not easy, following these few simple steps will go a long way to creating the kind of organization, personal power and employee motivation that you are looking for.
Show Individual Personal Value
Each of your employees has different personal drivers, professional interests, skills and abilities; learn to tap into them. Engage your employees in discussion, listen to them, take time for them, make them feel different and special. Make sure that employees know that their opinions are valued. The better you know your employees, the better you can help them do their jobs.
Show Personal Humility
While each of you are already successful in your own business, you should never be afraid to say “I don’t know” or to ask for help. Your employees will have some very good ideas so be open to new ways of doing things. Also, be willing to help and advise employees when needed.
Develop and Empower Employees
View your employee relationships in the same manner as your important friendship and business relationships; value them, develop them and empower them to carry out your business strategy. Most of all, help them to understand and become committed to your company vision.
Establish Specific Goals and Milestones
Your job is to develop and provide the systems and guidelines, to give employees stretch goals and then stand back and let them go and grow. Yes, you need to monitor progress regularly, and let people know where they stand but try to focus on what to do next time rather than what went wrong. Set few rules but be sure to set high standards.
Be Consistent in Your Approach
Consistency is personal leadership is all about integrity. Consistency in your approach will help others understand and see your own personal values and code of ethics. Employees will see that your behaviour is not just situational and they will trust and follow you.
As the business owner, you are already making your living doing what you love; so take the time to build the personal power of each employee and gain this same kind of commitment and passion. Success can indeed be yours together.
